Belangrijk om ons af te vragen:  What are Libraries For?   (Hugh McGuire)  Interessante gedachten:  ‘How you do something does not define why you exist’. We moeten ons meer beraden op waarom we er zijn: niet om gratis te verstrekken, maar voor archivering, ruimte bieden aan de gemeenschap ‘Indeed the role of libraries as curators, editors, and selectors will just grow in importance as the sea of bits and bytes continues to rise around us.’ Rick Anderson uit Utah op UKSG (waar ik helaas niet was) zei  -aangehaald door Zeemanspraat in  Gutenberg Terror :  ‘Purpose of the library is not to be a wonderful collection, but to provide information what users want’.  En Brad Meyer zei daar  ‘Stay True to Your Function, Let Go of the Form’.    ‘Libraries make no sense in the future,’ says Mike Shatzkin of Idea Logical Company, a well-known publishing consultant maar:  There will be an ongoing need for librarians.  Een heel ander uitgangspunt is dat we misschien wel geen bibliothecarissen meer nodig hebben maar IT Geeks:   A Library without Librarians? De bijdrage is een pleidooi voor een NBO, één (digitale) Nederlandse Bibliotheek voor het Onderwijs (van vwo en mbo tot hbo en wo) in plaats van het huidige gefragmenteerde landschap. Dat is in de huidige omstandigheden niet alleen noodzakelijk, maar ook wenselijk. Een gecentraliseerde digitale bibliotheekvoorziening die op lokaal niveau in tot studiecentra omgebouwde ‘traditionele’ bibliotheken overal toegankelijk is. Die traditionele, papieren bibliotheek is inmiddels overbodig. De student van tegenwoordig wil een prettige warme ruimte met pc’s, draadloos netwerk en goede catering; de rest is irrelevant’.
