De iPad is in Nederland: en ja ik heb ermee gespeeld en nee ik ga er geen kopen. Veel te duur en ik zie er niet zoveel voordeel van boven een smartphone – notebook  – laptopcombinatie.  Om de PDFs te annoteren heb je weer een betaalde app nodig (Papers is er een van): reason to justify an iPad for scientists en Tools We Use: iPad Edition.

Internet / het digitale leven

Het is niet nieuw en wij weten het allemaal al lang, maar het is heel goed dat er nu eens iemand anders opstaat en zegt Kennis is macht (NU.nl)  : de gemiddelde kenniswerker is 15 tot 20 procent tijd kwijt aan het zoeken naar interne documenten.

Één van de grootste uitdagingen ligt namelijk niet in de software maar in het categoriseren van gegevens, zodat deze ook op een logische wijze terug te vinden zijn. Dit is eigenlijk het vakgebied van een bibliothecaris en er zijn maar weinig bedrijven die zo iemand in dienst hebben. De tegenwoordige bibliothecaris is niet dezelfde van ongeveer 20 jaar geleden.”

Van die orde is ook al: It’s not information overload, nor is it filter failure: It’s a discovery deficit …” the cost of finding the articles to read which represented some 30% of total costs“.  (Science in the open) . En Ronald (Waarde van informatie) vond een artikel waarin gesteld wordt dat men gemiddeld 38 minuten zoekt naar een enkel document.
Krantenuitgevers snappen het internet niet. Reprocopy … in plaats dat ze blij zijn dat er nog iemand naar ze wil linken, bedenken ze monty python achtige regels. En inderdaad: The insane world of “No linking Policy” – what happened to the interNET? (Search of State)  Absurd toch …

• Mike’s ontmaagdings blog gelezen, wat een bijzondere man, knap & ontroerend ‘Hier kun je lezen hoe het hem is vergaan sinds de dag dat hij hoorde dat hij maagkanker had.’

Afknapper

• De Overheidsplannen zijn -via reed business- toegankelijk via … een betaalde toegang
• Gedonder met de KPN: weer een waarschuwing dat ik de grens van de fair use bereikte…  niet zo vreemd toch met de Android update OTA.  Ik begrijp niet goed dat ze maar blijven adverteren met dat ‘onbeperkte internet’.  Zelden zo’n beperkte ongelimiteerdheid gezien: ik kan mijn mobiele internet maar 3 van de 4 weken gebruiken. Bovendien hadden  ze ook nog eens drie dagen helemaal geen bereik.
