De APA heeft in de versie uit 2007 van de APA Style Guide to Electronic Resources een wijziging opgenomen ten opzichte van de eerste druk, zonder daar veel aandacht aan te besteden, omdat ze het niet als een ‘major change’ beschouwden, daar deze weer terugging naar de oorspronkelijk versie 5.

De ‘issue numbers’ dienen volgens de oorspronkelijke versie van de APA Style Guide to Electronic Resources uit 2007 zo opgenomen te worden:

For journal articles, always include the journal issue number (if available) along with the volume number, regardless of whether the journal is paginated separately by issue or continuously by volume. This change in reference style from the fifth edition of the Publication Manual is intended to make the format for journal article references more consistent

en in de revisie (ook van 2007) daarvan staat:

If, and only if, each issue of a journal begins on page 1, give the issue number in parentheses immediately after the volume number (see Example 2, first reference in the APA Style Guide to Electronic References). If a journal or newsletter does not use volume numbers, include the month, season, or other designation with the year, for example (1994, April). (page 2)

Aan een artikel uit een database kun je eigenlijk niet zien, of de paginering over de nummers doorloopt of niet, dus hoe moet je dan dat issue numer toevoegen of weglaten? Je kunt ze net zo goed altijd opnemen, gesteld dat je weet om welk nummer het gaat natuurlijk 😉 . Jammer dat APA daar op terug is gekomen.

In afwachting van editie 6 (o, kreun) keuren ze wel beide versies goed trouwens.
